Neuromuscular Dentistry: Comfort, Function, Beauty, Longevity

Having trained at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Raines understands the essential harmony required for optimal oral health, function, and beauty. Neuro means nerves; muscular, of course, refers to muscles; and dentistry has to do with teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry is a treatment philosophy that addresses the position and health of teeth, jawbone, jaw joints, muscles, and nerves for whole-mouth health.

Dentistry with emphasis on neuromuscular dentistry means that patients can trust Dr. Raines to make sure their smiles look great and work properly. When any component of the oral system breaks down, patients can experience pain ranging from mild to debilitating. The condition may stem from misaligned jaw joints, which is known as TMJ disorder.

The two TMJ, or temporomandibular joints, are located in front of your ears. They allow for complete movement required for talking, chewing, and biting. If the jaw joints become misaligned, patients can experience symptoms such as headaches, earaches, popping or clicking of the joints, pain in the mouth and related structures, and tingling fingers. Dr. Raines will identify the cause of your discomfort and recommend the most effective TMJ therapy to achieve balance and restore healthy function.

Successful TMJ therapy requires an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Raines bases diagnosis on a thorough neuromuscular evaluation, including:

  • Discussion about your symptoms, pain, and habits that affect your mouth
  • Physical exam of jaw joints, teeth, and jawbone
  • Listening for clicking or popping noises
  • Panoramic X-rays of the entire jaw area
  • Detailed imaging of the affected area
